Miss Cedar River Scholarship Program
NEWS RELEASE
Crowning of Miss Cedar River
A First for College Square Mall
COLLEGE SQUARE MALL (Cedar Falls, IA)…Could the future Miss Iowa or even Miss America be at College Square Mall on Saturday, January 21? Find out, as ten women contend for the title of Miss Cedar River at 4 p.m., by the waterfall in the west wing of College Square Mall.
The fourth annual Miss Cedar River (www.missiowa.com) event comes to College Square Mall for the first time. Ten contestants will be judged on: artistic expression, presentation and community achievement, presence and poise, and lifestyle and fitness. Four phases of competition are used when judging the women: interview-including tough questions on politics and the candidate’s chosen platform topic, swimsuit, evening gown and talent. Families, friends and the community at large are invited to support the incredibly talented and dynamic group of contestants. Among the special guests will be MC’s J.C. and The Hustle from the Q92.3 morning show.
The winner of the local competition will then vie for the title of Miss Iowa, this June in the Quad Cities. Mistakenly referred to as just a beauty pageant, Miss Cedar River is much more. The Miss Cedar River event is one aspect of the Miss America system; a system with the goal of producing winners who possess intellect and talent, not just beauty. The Miss America system is a Scholarship Program which promotes academic achievement. Co-Executive Director, Michelle Swieter boasts “Miss America is the leading scholarship provider for women in the world with $45 million given annually.”
The Miss Cedar River Scholarship Program though fairly new, is gaining attention. Former Miss Cedar River 2004, Carolyn Nicholas, represented the metro area well and was subsequently named
Miss Iowa 2004. She competed for the crown of Miss America 2005 (www.missamerica.com). Reining Miss Cedar River 2005 is Jessica Colwell. More information about Miss Cedar River can be found by emailing one of two pageant co-executive directors, Cheryl Moore (ydaldbab@hotmail.com) or Michelle Swieter (missjoco2005@hotmail.com).
