Walk or Ride for a Cure at College Square Mall

COLLEGE SQUARE MALL (Cedar Falls, IA)…Walkers and wheelchair riders will trek a course through College Square Mall at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2006 to raise funds for the second annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Stride & Ride.

More than 250 participants will log in miles at College Square Mall to reach a goal of $10,000, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Northern Iowa chapter.  Each walker and rider strives to raise at least $62 each; the cost of one minute of neuromuscular disease research.

Work up a sweat and have a good time doing it.  While walking and riding to raise cash for MDA (www.mdausa.org) participants can look forward to plenty of pampering breaks.  Rest stations will offer a variety of treats and refreshments including: bagels from Panera Bread, ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery, energy bars and bottled water from GNC and Things Remembered, drinks from the Cedar Valley Jaguars Basketball team, and coffee from Starbuck’s.  Live music from local band Stable Daze (www.stabledaze.com) will entertain striders and riders during the event in the east wing of the mall.

All participants receive a goody bag stuffed with mall coupons, samples and listings of other fun events throughout the Cedar Valley.  Following the walk, a ceremony will recognize individuals and teams with prizes in categories including: the team with the most event participants, individuals and teams who walk the most miles, and those raising the most in donations.

MDA provides research, professional and public health education and health care services.  Grants support the world’s top neuromuscular scientists in pursuit of cures and treatments.  Individuals and families affected by these diseases are kept informed by: publications of its national magazine in English and Spanish, a comprehensive website, videos, seminars and local newsletters.  Through 180 local offices across the country, MDA provides clinics, flu shots, support groups, summer camps for youngsters, and assistance with purchase and repair of wheelchairs and leg braces.

There are still spots remaining for those wanting to participate in the 2006 MDA Stride & Ride.  If you are interested in walking and joining a team, interested in forming a team or interested in sponsorship of the event please contact Missy Warrick by phone at (319) 268-9240 or e-mail (mwarrick@mdausa.org).
